June in London is when summer really gets underway. It?s not just the month that Londoners expect the weather to get serious, it?s also the time of year when London gets busy and fun. Here is a list of the things that make London the place to be at this time of year:
Trooping the Colour: The Queen?s official birthday, with all its splendid pageantry will take place on Saturday 11th June
World Naked Bike Ride: If a royal birthday isn?t enough for one day, then there?s always the World Naked Bike Ride. Full nudity is optional, but this is as much a celebration of the individuality of the human body, as it is about oil and motor car dependency.
Queens Club Tennis: The summer tennis season has officially started and Queens (June 13th ? 19th) is regarded as one of the key Wimbledon warm up tournaments. We?ll be shouting for Andy Murray to be the first person to win in five times.
The Championships, Wimbledon: This is the tournament that the world stops by to watch. Between June 27th ? July 10th, if you can?t get a ticket, there?ll be plenty of bars and restaurants showing the games.
Open Air Theatre: The Regent?s Park Open Air Theatre season is in full flow during June. Check out their website to see what?s playing: http://openairtheatre.com/
Open Garden Weekend: Discover London?s secret gardens over the weekend of 18th/19th June, when hundreds of gardens all over the city will be open to the public. From private garden squares, to roof gardens and allotments, more than 130 of the available gardens are ones normally closed to the public.
Opening of the new Tate Modern: On Friday 17th June , the Tate Modern?s new Switch Building will officially open to the public.
London Pride: 25th June is the date for this year?s Pride, which, as always, will attract enormous crowds and spectacular parties.
Greenwich & Docklands International Festival: Between 24th June ? 2nd July, Greenwich and its surrounding area will be host to London?s biggest celebration of outdoor theatre. Most of the events are free.
And……..if that isn?t enough, and you?re desperate to get out of the city for a few days, don?t forget, it?s music festival season, and any or all of the following festivals happen during June:
- Gottwood
- Download
- Isle of White
- Glastonbury
- Parklife Weekend
